As I mentioned in the 2016 Holiday Diaries plan at the start of the year, BattleDad, BattleKid and I are off to New York for a few days. As you read this we will be in the sky on the way to Ireland for an overnight pit stop before setting off in the morning from Dublin for JFK.
Now BattleDad was in New York when he was a small baby and so has no memories of it. To us, that trip doesn’t count and so we are considering this as our first ever trip to New York. I’ve been to Chicago with a previous job and BattleDad to Philadelphia. We’re both really looking forward to this trip to the Big Apple.
We’ve been watching the recent BBC2 3-part documentary on New York and it has been getting us excited. We aren’t spending too long in New York as it’s our first trip and with BattleKid in tow we wanted to use this as a sort of scouting trip for future ones. Everyone we know who has been to New York has returned many times again or plans to. We are already thinking that New York is going to become a bit like Paris for us, albeit a more expensive one.
You see, BattleDad and I absolutely adore Paris. BattleDad spent a year there not long after finishing school as part of the opening crew of Euro Disney, becoming fluent in French, and he brought me to Paris for my 30th birthday! It was cold in December but we made it to the top of the Eiffel Tower just minutes before my birth time which was incredible. I’d been to Paris on a school trip but it was another thing to go as part of a couple. After that we visited Paris every year for 5 years before we fell pregnant with BattleKid.
We already have plans to go next year with friends as BattleKid will be nearly 4 when we go, it’s my (ehem) 40th next year and it’ll be BattleDad’s 25th year anniversary of being there as part of the opening crew so there’s a few things to celebrate there next November or December. I cannot wait.
BattleDad also travels to Paris currently with work every second week, treating me to the most amazing Angelina cakes and macaroons. So as you can tell, we love Paris. And from things we’ve seen and been told I am guessing New York is going to capture our hearts in a way Paris did all those years ago. Hence, although we are only going to be in New York for 3 days, we are using this as a scouting trip and imagine it’s going to give Paris a run for its money!
So, in the last week or so my mind has been turning to packing for our trip. We chose to visit in September as we hoped it would still be warm. My sister-in-law, of CherrySueDoinTheDo, went with her sons last October and the weather was still nice, so we chose September in the hope it would be the same for us. I’ve been keeping an eye on the weather and checking average temperatures for September and I think we can pack light clothes for warm but not hot temperatures, the kind of things I’d pack for a winter week in the Canaries. We will of course be bringing rain jackets and a cardigan or hoodie, just-in-case. We’re Irish. We pack for all eventualities.
So as with my pre-Portugal post, here’s what is going in our suitcase for BattleKid and me!
Mum: 2 trousers, 1 jeans, 2 cardigans (one long sleeved, one short), 3 tops, 1 t-shirts, one pair of sandals, one pair of flat shoes, 1 pyjamas and underwear. I’ll be wearing light, loose harem trousers, a t-shirt and a hoodie on the plane over with my converse trainers.
BattleKid: 2 shorts, 2 trousers (these are just-in-case measures), 1 jeans, 4 t-shirts, 1 shirt, 2 hoodies, 2 shorts pyjamas, 1 long pyjamas, 1 hat, trainer socks. BattleKid will be wearing jogging bottoms, a loose t-shirt and a hoodie on the way over and the same (but clean versions, haha) on the way back.
BattleDad is planning on jeans, t-shirts and a loose hoodie for the duration. We are trying to take the minimum amount with us as we’d like to try and pack us all into just one suitcase. This will make things easier when we arrive in terms of getting a cab from the airport. It should also help us out on the last day as we are due to check out of our AirBnB accommodation at 12pm but our flight isn’t until 5.30pm. We thought one bag would be easier to manage if we decided to leave our accommodation early in the morning to do some last minute exploring or shopping.
In terms of hand luggage I have invested in a backpack change bag after reading Kerry, of Kerry Louise Norris’ post about the backpack change bag she recently got to review. I’ve already used it once since it arrived and I have to say it worked out much easier than my tote bag, leaving my two hands free for dealing with BattleKid or taking pictures.
BattleDad will bring a backpack with things like our kindles and tablet in it, and we will be bringing BattleKid’s Trunki filled with all the things we’ll need to make it through the seven and a half hour flight. These will include BattleKid’s tablet filled with plenty of episodes of Curious George, his earphones, books, toy motorbikes, sticker books and one or two other little surprises. I’m also packing his Trunki Snoozihedz as I’m hoping he’ll sleep on the plane. This might be wishful thinking though!
So there you have it. Planning and packing for a few days in New York. And if we love it as much as we think we will, no doubt another, perhaps longer trip will be planned within a few years of this one. In the meantime, while we enjoy ourselves stateside, I’ll be publishing our Holiday Diaries for our bank holiday weekend in Chester during this week while we are away. At some stage after we come back there will of course be the New York Holiday Diaries, so please stay tuned to the blog for those.
All that’s left to say is have a fab weekend and thanks for reading as always.
